Crystal is excited for our 2nd week with our colleague’s commitment to running or walking 100 miles in May for cancer research UK is truly inspiring. Their efforts to raise awareness and funds for cancer research are commendable. This initiative not only showcases their dedication but also highlights the importance of supporting such crucial causes. It’s heartwarming to see individuals coming together to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Let’s show our support and encouragement for our colleague as they embark on this meaningful journey.

Why is walking or running so important to promoting clean air day and also improving health?  Walking one mile a day strengthens muscle, boosts the health of the bone and improves internal health. Walking is a great cardiovascular exercise, as it increases the blood pumping throughout the body, increasing the heartbeat, which impacts your respiratory system and supporting your overall health. Walking regularly can reduce the risk of cardiovascular decrease by 35%.

Walking not only improves physical health but also has a positive impact on the environment. A study conducted by the Imperial College of London in 2021 revealed that by simply switching from using a car to walking, cycling, or using an electric bike for just one day a week, individuals can significantly reduce their carbon footprint in cities. The research suggests that if 10% of the population were to change their transportation habits, the decrease in emissions could contribute to about 4% of the total CO2 emissions from all car trips. This highlights the potential for small changes in daily routines to make a substantial difference in reducing carbon emissions.

Air pollution, whether indoors or outdoors, has been linked to an elevated risk of developing lung cancer, along with various respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. It is imperative to tackle and diminish the origins of air pollution to safeguard our respiratory and cardiovascular well-being.

Studies have shown that exposure to high levels of air pollutants, such as particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide, can have detrimental effects on lung function and increase the likelihood of developing chronic respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis. Additionally, long-term exposure to air pollution has been associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes due to its impact on blood pressure and inflammation within the cardiovascular system.

Furthermore, the burning of fossil fuels for energy production and transportation is a major contributor to outdoor air pollution. This includes emissions from vehicles, industrial processes, and power plants. Indoor air pollution, on the other hand, can be caused by activities such as cooking with solid fuels, smoking tobacco products, and using household chemicals without proper ventilation.

Addressing these sources of pollution through the implementation of stricter emission regulations, promoting renewable energy sources, and encouraging the use of cleaner transportation options can significantly reduce the negative impacts of air pollution on public health. By taking proactive measures to improve air quality, we can create a healthier environment for ourselves and future generations.
