From 1 April 2026, the UK Government’s Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) increases its grant support for eligible organisations installing EV chargepoints. If you’re planning workplace charging for staff, fleet, residents or visitors, this is a great time to get your site assessed and your application ready.
As registered/authorised installers, we can survey your site, advise on the right charger setup, and complete the installation so you can claim the grant correctly.
What is the Workplace Charging Scheme?
The WCS provides financial support towards the purchase and installation of EV charge point sockets at eligible sites.
- Covers up to 75% of the total cost of purchase and installation (including VAT) Capped at:
- £350 per socket (current cap)
- £500 per socket for installations completed from 1 April 2026
- Up to 40 sockets per applicant across all sites
- Example: if you install across 40 sites, you could claim for 1 socket per site
Who Can Apply ?
The scheme is open to eligible:
- Businesses
- Charities
- Public sector organisations
- Small accommodation businesses
There is a separate scheme (with different grant amounts) for state-funded education institutions.
Where is the scheme available ?
The WCS is available in:
- England
- Wales
- Scotland
- Northern Ireland
It is not available in:
- Channel Islands
- Isle of Man
Key Change – extended for a final year
The grant has been extended for a final year until 31 March 2027.
That means installations completed from 1 April 2026 can benefit from the higher £500 per socket cap.
Eligibility – What your site must have
To qualify, your site must meet the scheme requirements.
Property ownership / consent
You must:
- Own the property, or
- Have written consent from the landlord/landowner to install chargepoints
Parking requirements
Your site needs:
- Dedicated off-road parking clearly associated with the premises
- Evidence the parking is for staff or fleet, not solely for customer use
- Spaces that are suitable for chargepoint installation
- Chargepoint bays designated to you (the wider car park can be shared)
Parking must be either:
- On-site, or
- A reasonable distance from the place of work
Who can use the chargepoints?
- Businesses: chargepoints can be used by staff/fleet. You may allow local residents to use them outside office hours.
- Public authorities, charities, small accommodation businesses: no restriction — customers, guests, visitors, staff and others may use them.
If you make chargepoints available to the public, you must comply with the Public Chargepoint Regulations 2023 and associated guidance.
Working from home – can you apply ?
If your primary place of work is also your home, you may be eligible if your address is either:
- Listed as your place of business with Companies House, or
- Recorded on your business (non-domestic) rates bill
You must have off-road parking and use:
- An authorised installer, and
- A chargepoint eligible for both residential and commercial use
(If you choose a residential-only unit, your claim may be declined.)
Charging for company vehicles at employees’ homes
Employers can install chargepoints at employees’ homes for company vehicles where the employee can’t charge at work. You’ll need evidence for DVLA confirming:
- The employee works for you, and
- You have permission to install
Your Installer matters (a lot)
To claim the WCS grant, you must use an authorised installer. If you don’t, you won’t be able to claim.
That’s why we recommend arranging a site survey before you apply—so the design, hardware choice and installation plan align with the scheme rules.
Evidence you will need for the application
You’ll need to provide one of:
- Companies House reference number
- VAT registration number
- Business rate (non-domestic) bill
If you don’t have these (common for some charities, NHS surgeries, schools/colleges), alternative documents may be accepted.
If you’re unsure about eligibility, DVLA can help: workplacechargingscheme@dvla.gov.uk
Can you combine WCS with the EV Infrastructure Grant?
Yes — the WCS can be used alongside the EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleets (SMEs), but:
Both grants can be used for the same site
They cannot be used for the same chargepoints
If using both, you must:
Claim at least one chargepoint under the EV infrastructure grant first
Use WCS for additional chargepoints added later
Claiming the same chargepoint twice is treated as fraud and may lead to action.
Sites that are NOT eligible
The scheme does not cover:
- Locations outside England/Wales/Scotland/Northern Ireland
- Parking not designated to you
- Parking solely for customer use
- Parking facilities not yet built
- Domestic properties (unless it is your primary place of work and you meet the criteria)
- Sites that have already claimed previously under WCS or predecessor schemes (EVHS/DRS)
Mandatory requirements – when you can’t claim
You cannot claim if chargepoints/infrastructure were a mandatory requirement, including:
- Installations required under Part S Regulations (England) for relevant buildings from 15 June 2022
- Similar regulations in devolved nations (e.g., Scotland from 5 June 2023)
Planning conditions that mandated chargepoints/infrastructure
Ready to claim your WPC ?
If you’re considering workplace charging, the best next step is a site survey. We’ll confirm eligibility, recommend the right number of sockets, and design an installation that supports your staff/fleet needs now — with room to scale.
Want us to quote and survey your site ahead of 1 April 2026? Send us your site address(es), parking layout, and an estimate of how many bays you want to electrify—then we’ll take it from there.
